Having grown up in central Texas, I’ve always had an affection for Honey Mesquite trees. Especially when it comes to fire wood. I collected a few seeds last year and planted them this spring. Didn’t know that rabbits would love to eat them and lost a bunch before I got my rabbit fences up. I have about 20 left. I put the first two in a desert rock setting but still have 18 left. Can’t decide on what to do with them. Thinking I might find me a slab or large flat pot for a forest setting (more like a Texas range land setting) and do some individual trees with the three largest ones I repotted last week. Needs some ideas from anyone, especially Anyone who has endeavored to bonsai these things. If you grew up in central Texas, then I probably can't really add anything helpful, but I have tried a couple times to grow from seed, and lost them at transplant/repotting.
Because of their extremely dominant taproot, the toughest challenge is probably going to be developing a good nebari. Not sure it will be of any help, but it's there if you're interested. For whatever reason, I seem to have an affinity for thorny/spiky species. Great! I’ll take a look at it. I did bring some seedlings back from Texas and yes, they had very long tap roots. Those are the two on the rock. I left the tap roots on them and just layed them under the soil. I’ll worry about trimming them later. I was also thinking they might start suckers on the shallow tap roots and add to the display.
The first three seeds I repotted I started from seed in a small pot. They got lite consistent water and never grew a big tap root. Only thing I can think about that is in central Texas arid clay they have to drive a tap root deep to reach moist soil where as they didn’t have to in my little pot. They only have several small hairy roots. I just have to be careful to not let them get too wet. I hope you have great success!
I tried to germinate mesquite one year, but collected the seeds too late. I've always loved mesquite trees in the landscape. They earned their bad reputation not through any fault of their own but because of abusive cattle ranching practices, i.e. Also, yellow jackets and hornets love to build their hives in them. I don’t think they need stratification, but I do keep them in the fridge until I’m ready to plant them. They do need to be cracked open. They are like Boabab and other trees with an extremely hard shell on the seed which needs to be cracked open so moisture can get inside the seeds. When I was ready to plant them I take a pair of cuticle scissors and cut the seeds open away from the end where the endosperm is located. Once I’ve put the crack in it, I put them in water for 24 hours to get them hydrated. If I still have any floaters, I’ll cut them again and give them another 24 hours in water. If they still float, discard them.
Potting mix I use is 50-50 cactus mix and perlite. Plant about 1/4” deep. Do not over water them and keep it in an area that gets maximum full sun. I get about a 40-50% germination rate with that technique. Some will germinate in a couple of weeks while others may take a couple of months, so don’t give up too early.
Misspoke above. Update on my Mesquite endeavor. I’ve taken the four biggest and repotted them in bonsai soil. It’s a combination of lava, pumice and pine fines. I didn’t add akadama so they would stay dryer. They seem to like it and are growing strong. Seems the more I pinch them back, the faster they put out new buds. I went ahead and wired these four for some trunk movement. The trunks get firm really quick, so I put the wires on and give it a little more bend each week. Still tinkering with how much movement I want in each one. I expected their leaf stems would be much longer than they currently are. Maybe that’s a function of more water and less heat they are used to in central west Texas. Really hoping they keep their short tight leaf size.
I had a little concern about the tap roots, but after the first two the rest have not put out a single tap roots. I’m assuming that’s because they get surface water and don’t need it in my pots. These I repotted have bushy surface roots and not one long root trying to drill to China. I’ll look to up pot them next year and see what to do with the initial root training. It’s really hard to find any written guidance on bonsaiing Mesquite so I’m running blind on their training and just doing what I would do with other trees. So far they seem to not be bothered with anything I’m doing. The smallest of these four I repotted last week when it was 100F and it didn’t skip a beat. I have nothing to suggest or add. Great to find something that loves our extreme heat here in central Florida. They do grow like weeds. I had to do an emergency repot on a lot of the new seedlings this week. So much rain and they were starting to stress with all the excess water. I transferred them from their starter soil to individual pots with bonsai inorganic soil. If they made today’s pictures, they recovered quickly, but there are several that still look a bit sickly. Have to wait and see if they recover. All the healthy ones get pinched every week. Seems to be working well. They back bud like crazy. My root over rock was my first ever attempt. They are growing fine, but not much root is visible. After a couple of years growing, I’ll see if I can’t reduce it and follow the correct procedures to do it right. They actually still has their tap roots lying in that pot. Beginner’s errors. The little trunks harden fairly fast, so come late fall I’ll put some movement in the ones that are straight. They do go dormant for winter and it will be easier. Just have to do it with gloves on. Those tiny thorns are really sharp. Any advice on re-potting procedures including pot size and depth would be appreciated.
Sounds like you have a young seedling. I have no idea what you have, species wise. If the plnt is local to you, i would keep it outside. Small pots are only relevant for bonsai which for you is a decade or more away. Mesquite is a shrub like woody plant that is pretty much located in the south west USA - which means the desert part, not California. Put it in the ground for a couple of years and it probably has as good a chance of becoming a bonsai as several other kinds of plants. I think so. A 3" tall seedling might be too young to transplant. It all depends on your vision for the tree. The larger the pot you put it in the faster it will grow and bulk up.
There are lots of repotting videos on YouTube. Watch a handful - the things that are done in all or most of them are likely to be good advice. The YouTuber 'The Bonsai Zone' generally repots at least one tree an episode. Speaking of, since you are in Montana it would be wise to check the USDA hardiness zone of your Mesquite. Late summer is when most pods are dry and brittle and seed is ready. Break open the pod to reveal numerous dark seeds. Discard the pod and preserve the seed. Seeds need several treatments prior to planting in soil. Scarification is one important process. It mimics the action in an animal gut after a pod has been ingested. Sandpaper, a file, or even a knife may be used. Next, soak the seed in sulfuric acid, vinegar or plain warm water for up to an hour.
